Hyperpigmentation

When skin becomes darker in patches as compared to the surrounding areas of skin, it is referred to as hyperpigmentation.

Causes of Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation occurs when more melanin is produced. Melanin gives skin its color.

  • Protection from Sun:
A sunscreen with SPF of 30 or higher helps to protect the skin from hyperpigmentation.
  • Do not pick at the skin. Picking at the skin after an injury or at spots, scabs, and acne causes the hyperpigmentation.

Getting rid of Hyperpigmentation

A range of treatment methods and home remedies can be tried for getting rid of the mostly harmless hyperpigmentation.

Cosmetic procedures
  • chemical peels
  • laser therapy
  • intense pulsed light
  • microdermabrasion
Home remedies

Application of Aloe Vera, Licorice or green tea on the skin has shown good results in hyperpigmentation.

None of the above procedures or topical applications should be done without the consultation of a dermatologist or a skin care specialist.
